| This is the Sailing ship Columbia. Walt had the Columbia built and placed on the Rivers of America because he said "What we need is another big boat" That is the way Walt did things when he ran Disneyland. The Columbia is a full scale replica of the first ship to carry the American flag around the world. The Columbia was christened on June 14, 1958. The ship was built entirely at Disneyland except for the hull which was built at the Long Beach Shipyards and trucked in. The Columbia is used as an additional means of seeing the Rivers of America when the Mark Twain is down for repairs or when the park has over about 45,000 visitors. The Columbia is also used in the river spectacular show Fantasmic as Captain Hooks pirate ship. Also when Disneyland has Halloween parties the Columbia is magically transformed into a ghost pirate ship. Also the Columbia is a spiel attraction, and as such the spiel rivals the Jungle Cruise. |
