Continental Dark

I have a brew under the counter I was worried about. However, as it ages, the sweet taste fades. Now it is dark beer, but not heavy. It has been in the bottles for a year; longer than most of my beers last.
If you area around, swing by for a something smooth.

August 22, 2010

It has been some time, I know. I have recovered from the loss of the Brewery owner. And, I am about out of beer, so I have to get out of my funk.
Not much has been happening here in regard to Beer and Trucks. The truck still sits and the beer needs to brew.
I do try and keep with the Basic Brewing video PodCasts in an attempt to learn something new. A new idea was presented on one of the casts...Brewing Seasons. Instead of brewing whenever I am out of beer, I will brew during one time of the year. Without much research, it would seem early spring would be the best time of the year. The lighter beers don't need much time to ferment and condition, thus making them ready for summer when you want a lighter beer. And brewing a heavy beer for winter would allow the beer to condition for many months before the cold weather kicks in.
Two problems pop up here, maybe three.
First: I don't have that many bottles. I am wanting to keg a few batches. The keg idea may need to be utilized if I go with a brewing season. Necessity will push my horizons.
Second: Keeping the heavier beer cool for a proper fermentation/conditioning. I do have a full size fridge given to me by sweetie/Mom. I don't think she had brewing in mind when she donated the fridge. How many bottles/carboys/kegs/buckets can one fit into a full size fridge. Containers do not need to be round. If I can warm up the freezer above freezing, I just might have a method!
Third: What do I drink on those warm days of the last of winter? My NLR Pilsner and the NLR Red Ale improved each time I opened a bottle. Some of the bottles were over a year old. So If I brew enough to store away for the winter, I should be good to go. In all honesty, my beer tastes better the longer it is in the bottles. The last Pilsner I opened was clean, crisp, clear, and tasty. Very good beer.
I will get a batch going soon, to help me through the fall and winter.

Ah yes...

The temperature is warming, the beer is cooling, my stocks are improving, the fields are drying. Yes, it is a good time of year.
I can get out and work on trucks and boats and play a little soccer. Now, I might have something to blog about. Not much to say when the truck is frozen.

Yea so what.....

New Belgium thinks they have something new

But Booda has been involved with brewing for almost 14 years. He was exposed to brewing when he was almost a year old. And he has his picture on all the brew, not just one style!

If I don't survive...

Evidently we are in for a big one tonight. The Governor has issued a State of Emergency for the Winter Weather that is not even here yet.

It has been cold all week and ice has formed on the waterways around here, but...this is Arkansas.

Update...The Highway Department has the sand trucks rolling at 8:00 pm.

It is 34ºF, 1.1º C, 274.261K

Updates as needed

Snow, ice, slush,, but nothing in Little Rock.

Random Stuff to end the Year

At a Pilot Travel Stop, I purchased a few caffeine loaded drinks to enhance my travel experience. Included on the receipts below the two drinks was "Deposit Beverage Sin 0.00"
A purchase at Wendy's Old Fashion Hamburgers was classified as Emergency. Actually the server was listed as 'Emergen'
I eat at Sonic and Taco Bell WAY TOO MUCH.
The Server at the UnderGround Pub was 'Phantom.'

Thanksgiving Week

I am thankful I can take off a week from work. Well, three days and two days for the holidays. But hey, it is a week.
So for my vacation...
Saturday: Fishing with Pops, the rocket scientist pictured below, and then dinner and drinks on Nebo with friends and soon-to-be family (soon is a relative word).
Sunday: Two soccer games. Some might same I am in shape, some say I am stupid. I say I hurt. Check here for my goal count. And here for my Card count
Monday: Took Booda in for surgery to remove Tumors from his colon. He is recovering well.
Tuesday: Played video games, did laundry, cleaned part of my room, organized some of the brewing stuff.
The rest of the week? Eating on Thursday is all I got planned.

Truck, then beer

Saturday was a day of accomplishments.
The Truck is back on the road, legally. I still need to finish the linkages for the carbs, but it is drivable and fun! And of course some tuning when all the carbs are working.
The brown ale is brewing. And brewing strong. I shortened the boil time by a few minutes due to time. I don't think it will affect the final product. In fact, it has been bubbling strongly for the past 24 hours. This batch just feels better than before.
And for this batch, and future brews, I am using this iPhone app.

So I have in my beer vault....
Irish Red
NLR Pilsner
NLR Brown Ale (current upgraded batch brewing)
NLR Continental Dark coming for Christmas

Maybe for an early Christmas someone will give me a keg system!!

Teach a Friend to Homebrew day

11th Annual Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day and The Beer and Trucks homebrew site is participating in this year’s celebration.

Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day is an international event celebrated each year on the first Saturday in November with the goal of introducing people to the homebrewing hobby and establishing relationships with local homebrew supply shops and homebrew clubs. Beer and Trucks is happy to invite anyone who is interested in learning how to homebrew to stop by the site on Saturday, November 7.

In 2008, over 2,100 participants brewed approximately 2,800 gallons on Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day at 140 sites worldwide (including sites in Canada, Kenya, Denmark, and 40 states in the United States). This year, the AHA expects even greater participation.

"One of the great things about homebrewers is they are happy to share their knowledge and to pass on the joy that they find in homebrewing to others,” states Gary Glass, the director for AHA, “that's really what Teach A Friend To Homebrew Day is all about."

Homebrewing is a hobby that is increasing in popularity and something that almost anyone 21 years and older can enjoy. Homebrewing is a rewarding but easy hobby – anyone who has a kitchen can do it. The equipment and ingredients needed are less expensive than most people think.

For information on how to participate in this year’s Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day event and to view the registered sites, visit www.beertown.org/events/teach

Brewing has a history of Green.

I can't say I am green when it comes to brewing, but I am always looking for folks who make it work.
Check this out. Brewery Age

I will be looking for their beers, along with Diamond Bear ad Vino's brew.

Getting the spouse to come along.

Over on ‘It’s 5 o’clock somewhere’, a writing project was presented for fellow bloggers. I was unsure if I could participate because it specifies ‘spouse’ and ‘what the spouse could do if not sailing’. Then I reread the instructions.
Simply compose a blog post, or post a response in the comments here, telling about things besides sailing that can be done near your local sailing venue, so non-sailing travel companions can enjoy themselves, or for sailors to do when the weather isn't suitable for sailing
What can be done in Little Rock if not sailing.
Let’s start with the Grand Maumelle Sailing Club . You can sail on the Arkansas River, but I bet it is tricky.

So now on to the non-sailing stuff.
Catch a show at the Verizon Arena.
Visit the oversized trailer called The Clinton Library
Take the kids to Museum of Discovery
Find a parking spot in the River Market : Saturday morning farmer’s market, various shows in the Riverfront Amphitheater, Local restaurants, various musical acts in the evenings, pub views of the Arkansas River
Cruise the river on the Arkansas Queen
Visit a sub at the Arkansas Maritime Museum . Soon to include a tug boat!
Enjoy the largest park at Burns Park : You could find one or all of the following: Hiking, fishing, baseball, softball, biking, waterslide, golf, rugby, Disc Golf, Ultimate Frisbee, Water ski competition, Triathlons, Dog park/run, PlayLand, Bocce, Tennis, Basketball, kayaking, canoeing, running,
Walk, Run or Bike the River Trail
Walk on the Big Dam Bridge. Yes it really is called the Big Dam Bridge
Hike up Pinnacle Mountain . Take the easy or tough side. Make it really tough and run up the trails. The view is well worth the trip up the mountain.
See how to change the world at Heifer International
See Arkansas’ Political history at the Old State house
See some ducks at The Peabody Hotel
See a movie outdoors down by the river . If in town on a Wednesday night.
Watch up and coming ball players at Arkansas Travelers Dickey-Stephen's Field
Enjoy Arena Football with the Arkansas Twisters
Things not on the river....
Take a Diamond Bear Brewery Tours (if in town on a Saturday)
See Arkansas’ impact on the Military at MacArthur Park
Catch a show or exhibit at the Arkansas Arts Center
Visit the opening credits of ‘Gone with the Wind’ at The Old Mill
Volunteer
Enjoy the smells of Vino’s . And have a pizza and microbrew while your at it. Grab a spot on the upper floor of the deck if you can.
Visit the Zoo.
Play some golf at War Memorial park . You can lose your ball on the interstate, in the zoo, in a stadium, on two major thoroughfares and one minor road, or the archery range. The first hole was voted as the toughest first hole in Arkansas!
Drive by the house in “Designing Woman ”.
See how it was at the Historic Arkansas Museum.
Make a stop at the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame and see we do know how to play.
Take a drive up Kavanaugh Blvd and stop at any restaurant/bar/pub and have great food and service. Just don’t start at Pizza D.
Grab a drink at WhiteWater Tavern . It does have Presidential connections.
