3.04.06: on the mend Mason's chest xray from last night revealed he has bronchiolitis. This is usually caused by a viral infection, typically RSV. Because Mason tested negative for RSV, then it's presumed it was triggered by a different type of virus. Babies who have bronchiolitis are more likely to develop asthma later in life. And, of course, all of this is fairly common with preemies. After a bit of a rough night, Mason is doing a little better today. He's off of supplemental oxygen and his O2 sats are in a reasonable range without it. His heart rate has come down to something closer to normal (120-140 bpm). After being on intravenous fluids overnight, he's fairly well hydrated now. He couldn't keep anything down this morning, but later was able to consume a few ounces of Pedialite and then a few more ounces of formula. It's not much, but at least it's a start. For the most part Mason rested, but he occasionally perked up to do a little babbling, enjoyed being read to and seemed to really enjoy browsing the photos I brought from home of Avery and all the pets. Mary hand picked a bucket full of toys to borrow from the Child Life center to offer him a little entertainment and Mason played with as much energy as he could muster. Once in a while, we could even draw a little smile out of him. Mary is staying with Mason again overnight. If all goes well and Mason continues to improve and can keep food down, he should be discharged tomorrow. Meanwhile, Avery continues to plug along at home with no signs of illness. He's looking forward to having his brother home. Let's hope it's tomorrow. |
