School
First days of Kindergarten!
08/19/09 21:10
Well,
Monday was Cady’s first day of school, and so
far we’ve made it thru almost an entire week!
Her teacher is awesome. We’ve scrapped and
saved, and we’re on a really tight budget, but
we managed to keep her in private school, at least
for Kindergarten. I would love to continue with this
school past Kindergarten, but when we decided to
adopt a second child, we knew we might possibly be
foregoing private school in the future. We decided
that the pros of Cadence having a sister out numbered
the cons. So, for now she’s in private school
for Kindergarten, and who knows what the future
holds. I hate to say it, but one of the driving
factors for me was that it’s an all day
Kindergarten, 8:30-3:30, with lunches (healthy
lunches) included. Otherwise, with both Scott and I
working, she would be in daycare for probably 5 hours
a day after Kindergarten in public school, and
we’d be paying for that anyway. Those were not
the driving forces behind Scott’s desire to
keep her in private school, and if he has his way,
even though the schools here are very decent, he
would have her continuing in private school till 6th
grade.
Oh, but she adores school. She has a cubby full of workbooks, a pencil box, crayons, erasers. The art teacher came into the classrooms today. Yes, you read me right......an A-R-T teacher. Do you remember those from your childhood? It even feels odd writing the words ‘art teacher’. They’re unheard of any more. I never quite understood how public schools could get about the same amount of money per child, and yet there’s no money for art any more. Heck, public schools probably get MORE money per head count! But so much is chopped out of their curriculum.
So, off she went on Monday.....She went to the same school for Kindergarten-Kickoff, so the teacher and the school were very familiar to her when she started “real” Kindergarten on Monday. The teacher must have had fun disposing of the rocks and other treasures Cady had collected and tucked neatly away into her cubby, at the school during the summer.
In July, her teacher had told me that Cady is very “sociable”.
“Yes” I agreed, feeling very confident in the outgoing child we had encouraged her to be.
Then her teacher looked at me again and said, “Well, I mean she’s a socialite.”
Yes, she is.
“OK, well, she talks a lot to her peers” her teacher added. “She does all her work, and does it well, but she’s very chatty”.
“Oh, yeah.....riiiiiight! OOPS. Right, yeah, I guess she does”. And she’s right. Cady’s always talking. She’s always smiling and talking. She’s not disruptive, but she does like to chat. I’ve always chalked it up as being charismatic and outgoing. But, she does have the gift of gab. And as any brilliant teacher will do, she moved Cadence to the front of the class by the time real school started.
And, Cady? Well, she thinks that’s just wonderful!

...So why am I not prepared?
08/16/09 21:27
My
baby starts Kindergarten tomorrow. KINDERGARTEN!
It’s all over now. No matter how hard I try,
she’s not going to stay tiny. She’s going
to be in big girl school. It’s so fun, so
exciting, scary, so wonderful, so sad, so busy, sooo
busy!
Cady and I made a calendar a few weeks ago of this month’s days, and she’s marking them off as the days pass. She doesn’t seem anxious, she seems happy to meet her new challenges head on. It reminds me so much our first encounter with her. She looked bold and ready for what was coming next. She had no idea what it was, but she knew it was different, so she met it head on. She was quiet, but seemed to like the newness of our faces, the hotel room, her first bath, the little toys we brought with us. She liked it.
She’s been going to Kindergarten Kick-off for the summer. She’s been able to go to the school daily, and spend time with her teacher and many of her classmates, who also came from the same preschool as she did. We’ve gotten school uniforms, school shoes, long white socks, short white socks, skooters, pants, shirts. She’s had her hair trimmed, stopped taking naps, and has grown 3 and a half inches in the past 6 months.
Last week, we visited her old preschool and the children in her preschool classroom now look so young. She towers over them, and her features are becoming more defined.
In every way possible, she’s ready. So, why am I not prepared? My monkey is going to Kindergarten. I knew this was coming but I’m just not ready for it. In only 10 more years she’ll be going on 15 years old. OUCH! And in High School.
Scott has always been the one in our family to make videos. And he does it quite well. I’ve left it to him to always put the finished products together with music. Today, I created one of my own. It’s a compilation of pictures, starting on Gotcha Day, and going to Preschool Graduation Day.
I hope you enjoy it.

Preschool pictures

Here we are, almost at the end of the year, with
summer coming around the corner.
Our baby girl got her preschool pictures taken, and along with them are the graduating pictures for this year. She’s graduating from preschool! Next year will meet us head on with many new adventures. Kindergarten is something she is ready for, and can’t wait to dive right in. Me, however, I’m not so ready for my baby to be going to elementary school. It’s gone by too fast. I want to do it all over again with her. But I’m excited for her.
The presentation for graduating preschool will be held in May. I think the two of us parents are going to be crying as we sit in the audience....a lot!
Here’s the latest preschool portrait April 2009
(She’s grown so much in the few short years we’ve been a family. But she’s still Daddy’s Babygirl)
I assembled pictures below from days we spent with her at preschool over the past few years. As I fumbled through all of the pictures on my computer to find her preschool photos, I couldn’t help but think of the song Bookends;
‘Time it was.
Oh what a time it was.
A time of innocence.
A time of confidences.
Long ago. It must be.
I have a photograph.
Preserve your memories.
They’re all that’s left you.’

In this one, she had to point out to the teacher, that Mama was standing ‘over there’
