Dear Old Waysers,
When I went to the 1999 Minnesota Horse Expo on Saturday,
the last thing I expected to encounter was one of Loreena's songs.
Take a wild guess which song might be popular with the horsy folk.
That's right, it's "Night Ride Across The Caucasus."
A little background.
The MN Horse Expo was held at the MN State Fairgrounds in
Minneapolis/St, Paul. There were 40 breeds of horses exhibited,
including the unusual Norwegian Fjord, Bashkir Curly, Icelandic
and Friesian. All afternoon, breed demos continued in the old
Coliseum Arena. A breed demo consists of from one to ten
outstanding individuals of a particular breed being ridden (rarely lead)
into the arena and displayed/exhibited for the enlightenment of
the crowd. An announcer reads a history of the breed and whatever
special attributes that are considered unique to that breed. Riders
put their mounts thru their paces for about five minutes per breed.
Background music is played, and this included NRATC.
I missed more than half of the demos, but still heard Night Ride...
three times. For the Arabians, the Morgans and one other breed.
Obviously, someone realized that this song was made to watch
horses by. An athletic Arabian galloping around the arena, bearing
a rider dressed in flowing desert regalia seemed to invoke the song
with each beat of its hooves. The Morgan, in English dressage style,
with rider in white breeches and knee high black leathers, was
likewise performance enhanced by Loreena's abilities.
What a day, getting to see all those beautiful animals and getting
a dose of Loreena at the same time. :-)
(I could sure use a lot more trips like this one!) ;-)

I recently went to the Intercollegic Horse Show Associations National
competition w/ my team, and, while stopping for dinner on the way home, sat
down w/ my instructor and friends and started talking about music, amoung
other things. I confessed that LM is my FAV. singer and my instructor said
she'd only heard The Mummers' Dance and loved it. A friend then jumped in
and said that she had the album (TBOS) and loved it and she had to let her
borrow it...esp. NRATC. Tee hee hee. Guess what I had brought with me to
listen to?
If you listen to that song, not only do you hear the steady beat of hooves,
but if you "feel" the music and move to it ever so slightly, you find
yourself moving as if you're on a horse (esp. a cantering one. There is a
definate slow rocking back-and-forth int he music). I love it!! And,
incidentally, if you start listening to Night Ride when you walk out the
front door of my dorm, you're in the final few measures by the time you
reach the equestrian center.
