This website was created to display images created from photos from the estate of Blanche (Cagely) Campbell

construction of the dam at Cornell, WI Page 1 / Page 2 / Page 3 |
- Postcard#1 -From the collection of Blanche Campbell South of Bruce, WI on highway 40
Soft Maple School house. Teacher Blanche Campbell? and students
- Postcard#2 - Bridge over Soft Maple Creek just downstream from.......the old logging dam?
South of Weyerhaeuser, WI on the route of the "Old Historic Road".
"Old Historic Road" follows the grade of an even
older logging railroad from 1875 built by the
Mississippi River Logging Company. Note: I found
this statement on a list identifying the old barns
of Rusk County. I think it might be referring to
this bridge. The Burak barn is just across the
field from the probable bridge site.
"The Burak barn was built about 1912 by Phil Kaehler
who was Rusk County Highway Commisionner at that time.
It was timber frame construction, the timbers being
salvaged from the railroad bridge over the Big Soft
Maple, south of Weyerhauser on the old County Rd. M.
It is the only barn I have surveyed that has had
cattle in it from when it was built until now. The
Farm now has 60 milk cows and 60 beef cows."

Platbook Map: Probable bridge location over Soft Maple Creek as indicated in
Gates County platbook. Note large flowage to the west, formed by
pre-1900 logging dam. During it's existence, this flowage
was apparently larger than nearby Amacoy Lake. South of Weyerhaeuser, WI on the route of the "Old Historic Road"
- Modern topographic map showing probable bridge location.

Modern aerial photo showing likely bridge
loacation. This section of the "Old Historic
Road" is abandoned where it runs thru farm fields.
