Nokia IrDA Data Compatibility List

IR-savvy Nokia GSM phones provide some protocols to exchange data with the outside. Discussed below is the 6100-style protocol and OBEX/IrMC.

6100-style: thanks to this proprietary protocol, GSM phones with infrared port build-in from Nokia can receive various data directly via the port. Not all data are acceptable by all phones, however. Below is a summary:

Nokia 8250NY1Y4YYN
Nokia 8850NY1Y2YY4N
Notes:1.The phone cannot receive in this mode but OBEX/IrMC.
2.CLI logos are not accepted by old firmware.
3.The vCard is required to be in a much stricter format.
4.The phone accepts operator logo data but somehow mess it up.

These phones can "beam" a number of data as well, including those for IrDA-savvy printers. Here they are:

Notes:1.The 6100 mode is added to newer firmware (5.17).
2.Newer versions of this model (v4.8x or greater??) prefer OBEX/IrMC.
3.The option is cancelled on firmware 4.94 or higher.

IrOBEX/IrMC: Nokia GSM models introduced after the 6100 series added support to the IrOBEX/IrMC standard. The new capacity allows vCards and vCalendars to be exchanged with other devices such as Notebook PCs or PDAs. Unlike the 6100-style protocol mentioned above, a Palm handheld can send to and receive from these phones using the build in Address Book and Date Book applications. The 6210, 7110, 8210, 8250, 8290, 8310 and 8850 are known IrMC-savvy and the list is growing. However, some non-conformance to the vCard and vCalender standards causes compatibility issues among other devices.
