In the world of Ericsson phones, infrared ports are optional accessories. Ericsson offers the DI 27 Infrared modem to 628-, 688-, 768-, 788-, 868-series and the DI 28 for the A-, R- and T-series users. The SH888/I888 was the only phones to include a build-in "DI 27" IR modem. Recently, IR-enable choices expand with the introduction of the R320s, the R520m, the T39m, the T68 and their successors.
The Ericsson DI 27 type of IR modems are IrDA compliance supporting the following standards: IrPHY (SIR only), IrLAP, IrLMP, IrPnP, IrCOMM (3- and 9-wire serial). GSM and Ericsson-specific AT-commands are avaliable for controlling and customising the phones. Phonebook manipulation and melody download commands are part of the set. The latest IR-enabled phones support also IrOBEX and IrMC for exchanging vCards, vCalendars and eMelodies.
Taking another step forward, the R520m (R2A), T39m, T68 and T68i adds 1 Mbit/s transfer speed (MIR) and IrTran-P support for importing picture directly from digital cameras. These phones can also exchange pictures in GIF format via IrOBEX using Bluetooth, IrDA or the build-in GSM modem. The build-in or external (DI 28) IR ports also allow customisation of operator logos, background pictures, startup/shutdown animations on phones that have those features.
Besides adding support to new object type support for IrOBEX and additional AT-commands for IrCOMM, there are no significant changes to the IrDA port on Sony Ericsson phones since the T68i. The support of IrTran-P may be axed as no further mention of such in the related whitepaper since the T68i. Please note that the port on the J200, the J210 and the Z200 series have been reduced to merely support beaming of wallpapers and ringtones.
