28 February 2004

The day after my second visit to the Bessemer, the sun was still shining. My trigger shutter-release finger was still itchy and with Berea so close by, who could resist?

It took until noon to persuade Grandma to drive over there, but we were on the scene at 1:30 p.m. – just in time for an eastbound CSX train.

Berea’s old tower was still standing, but seemed shabbier than when I had last seen it.

The place was packed with railfans, probably close to three-dozen of them. Next up was another CSX eastbound.

…Followed shortly by a NS eastbound. It is difficult to photograph the trains after the sun crosses over the tracks, but I made the best of it.

Another CSX eastbound, one NS eastbound, and yet another CSX all passed in rapid succession.

I tried an atmospheric shot here. Anybody from RailroadForums.com will recognize one of the lenses here!

I finally figured out where to shoot southbounds on the NS;

A northbound mail train came through…

And a southbound that I didn’t catch on to in time…

Norfolk Southern’s Whitestone train showed up in time for a fast-moving CSX Autorack train to fly through. Note the missing paint on the leader.

Another NS southbound!

And after a long lull, CSX sent two trains with brand new units in the point westward.

During the lulls between trains, I got to talking with some of the guys. A pleasant exchange of information followed, and I showed a few prints. Photo by Dave Hymen.

As a finish to a great day, the tripod and Grandma took this group shot:

You can bet that the next time I’m in Elyria, I’ll go over to Berea!
