about

Welcome, weary traveler! My name, as you've no doubt deduced, is Alex. I'm a 25-year-old community practice social worker. I am an alumnus of Wayne State University, where I earned my Master of Social Work, and Albion College, where I double majored in Computer Science and Religious Studies. In between the two, I worked for City Year Detroit, a nonprofit service organization focused on tutoring and mentoring children in Detroit and its surrounding communities.

In my free time I like listening to/creating music, watching movies, playing video games, taking digital photographs, and working on my computer. I also enjoy engaging in deep philosophical or otherwise interesting discussions. Some athletic activities I willingly participate in are bocce ball, in-line skating, hockey, bowling, and frisbee. Extreme!

My fiancée, Sylvia, is pretty awesome. She is in the University of Michigan's Master of Arts with Certification program. She wants to teach middle school math and science, which is very brave, because it's middle school. She is also pretty much the best soccer referee out there.

My family can be seen here enjoying a birthday dinner for my dad and me. Pictured are my dad, my mom, me, my sister Betsy, and my brother-in-law Jeff. Not pictured are my newts Scamp and Stripe.

If you'd like to know me better, you should talk to me, instead of reading about me on some web page. The best ways to get in touch with me are AIM and e-mail (change the " at " and " dot " to "@" and ".").

I've decided to ride my bike more, and drive less, when possible. The reasons are, in no particular order: fitness, the environment, and ridiculous gas prices.

You owe it to yourself to see Sicko. This film serves as a great starting point for seriously talking about universal health care in the US.

I almost missed this nugget buried at the end of a Free Press front page story about the DaimlerChrysler breakup:

"America's health care crisis is out of control, and that's why the UAW supports a national, single-payer, comprehensive health care plan for every man, woman and child. We cannot solve the health care crisis in any one set of negotiations with any one company."
