The First Day in HarareGetting Acclimated
So it's July 2nd...at about 4 am. I can't sleep. No
matter what I do, I always spend the first 4-5 days waking up at 3:30am. It's
not connected to my "Clock" because that is 6:30pm in San Francisco...anyway...
The first day went well. I got in Monday night and Michel was waiting for me at the Airport. Michel Gin is my host for the Zim Trip. His wife works at the French Embassy in Harare and Michel is a retired helicopter pilot. He is also an avid 3D hobbiest and dvGarage's only customer in Zimbabwe. Michel invited us for dinner last trip and insisted that I stay with him this trip. What was I to say? :) We started at ZIVA by getting back up to speed...seeing where everyone was and covering a little training. The students are working on a short video piece about the art and culture in Zimbabwe. We are using 3D logos, Video, Digital Sets, Compositing, and some Photogrammetry (image based modeling) to achieve the process. The intention is not to provide just "Basic Video Skills" but rather begin to build the foundation of high-end visual effects knowledge that would allow them to eventually compete in a world market. In only a few short years, the location of an artist will be less relevant than their skills and connections. This is what we are preparing them for. We picked out a logo designed by one the students. Most of the crew worked on their own version and then we chose the final verison as a group. While I gave some input, I tried to stay clear of actually making the decision. In the afternoon, Michel and I went to a "Mall" near Chapungu Sculpture Park (more about this later). It's a bit odd when you get there. Of course, you hear about the troubles of Zimbabwe but you see little of it here. It's mostly an upper class arts and crafts mall...though most of the prices, for an american, seem extremely low. The parking is filled with new Mercedes, Audi's and Land Rovers and mostly white customers. Many of them have diplomatic jobs or are White Zimbabweans. It reminds me of Bucks County, PA...very fru fru. I expected to hear "Pachebel's Canon" at any moment. ![]() The Mall ![]() I'm teaching a logo animation class. ![]() Logo Picking...
