Catching up

A half day in Dar before we go back out...

We began at DTP attempting to upload more files. I needed to post my repaired blog (I had to re-build it) and movies I plan to show soon. While uploading (20 megs takes a couple of hours), we went to the K Tea Shop in Downtown Dar. It’s like a much hipper and grittier Starbucks with people bustling about, eating Kabobs and drinking Chai. An Indian Muslim establishment, Arabic mixed with English on the walls and in the air.

Hanif explaining the finer points of Chai and the Tanzanian Culture.

Hanif SMSing.

Before leaving, I checked the nearby video store for titles. Hulk, Matix: Reloaded, and even T3 were already on VCD though he said he didn’t have the DVDs yet.

Cyber Cafe, Tanzanian Style.

We then visited TVT, the national television station. Ngayomo gave us a tour of the facility, which includes a full media truck, studio, and edit bays. They were sold on Sony Dedicated Workstations for editing. Of course, one’s not working and has been in Nairobi for 6 months. They don’t know if the $83,000 boat anchor will be back. We couldn’t help but point out that they could have 3 blown out Final Cut workstations and a Fiber Channel for the price of one of the edit bays. This is a constant problem in Africa. TV stations are sold far more than they need and end up with expensive, complicated, and rarely working hardware and undertrained staff resulting in lower quality production value for no reason. CNN is capturing footage on VX-2000s while African stations struggle with more expensive and less portable solutions. Of course, we intend to help these stations find less expensive and more effective production tools. It’s part of the process. It’s not that the expensive equipment isn’t ever necessary...just not in the current conditions. It’s kind of like saying you need a truck, and because you are the government station, you get sold a Tractor Trailer when all you needed was a pickup.

We then packed our bags and made our way to the Lazy Lagoon, another lodge owned by Foxes of Africa. As opposed to Mikumi Park, it’s only an hour out of town. You then have to take a boat to the Penisula/Island. It’s hard work covering these locations...but we’re professionals. We can handle it. :)

We shot a few QTVRs, caught up and prepared for the next day of work...or whatever you call it...
