Phrygian Dominant Hexatonic

Exotic Hexatonic Scale

definitions:

Expressed in half step intervals: 1 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 2

With "C" as the tonic: C - Db - E - F - G - Bb - (C)

For the purpose of this post please accept the name "phrygian dominant hexatonic" for this scale.

observations:

Two mutually exclusive triads. In "C": C major and B flat minor.

Four note chords which may also be derived are D flat diminished seventh and G half diminished seventh; and, by extension, five note chords: C7b9 (or C11b9) and Bbm6/9 (or Dbmaj13/b5)

Difficult intervals in the key of "C" include: an augmented second between D flat and E; a tritone between D flat and G; and a tritone between E and B flat.

These two pentatonic scales may also be derived: Bb melodic minor and C myxolydian. Please see my previous post on pentatonic scales here.

The quality of this scale is reminiscent of flamenco, middle-eastern musics and certain Indian ragas.

The composition Joy by John McLaughlin and L. Shankar (Shakti with John McLaughlin; Columbia PC 34162, 1975) is based on the phyrgian dominant hexatonic scale. See excerpt here (pdf).
