On Friday 23rd June 2006 two representatives from three different schools in the Borough of Spelthorne went to the council offices in Knowle Green, Staines.
Our brief was to think, and design pages of a website that children would like to see. We were also asked to find out what websites children like and why.
All of the children in their school would have to have a say in it.
At 9:15 - 9:20 we introduced ourselves to all of the adults and children there. The schools there were Spelthorne Junior, St. Nicholas School and Chenniston, Sunbury.
At 9:20 - 9:25, we met the mayor, and his consort, (his Mother). The Mayer is called Malcolm Royer. From 9:25 - 9:50 we had a tour around the building and had to remember it all for the quiz we did, and then we met up in the Council Chamber to discuss the answers with each other.
At 9:50 - 10:05 the Mayor held a question and answer session for us to get to know him and what its like to be the Mayor. From 10:05 - 10:20 we had a tea break and got loads of lovely biscuits to eat.
Our 7th session took 40min to complete, and it was the most vital bit of the day, it was to do the presentations. We did it in alphabetical order so we were second. Then we had time to discuss the presentations with Anna Graham (Assistant Leisure Service Manager).
We think it went very well because we were the only school who actually made the WebPages. Anna said we did very well as well and was complimentary about the presentation. She said that she would like to take some of the ideas and put it in the website. We felt very proud.
We spent time practising the presentation because we needed speak loud, look up, and learn our words, this also helped to do the presentation because it made it look much more professional for the audience.
Challenge 5 (a group of 13 pupils in year 5) did loads of interviews and questionnaires to find out what people would like to see on the website. When we found that out we assigned people to each page of the presentation. This made the presentation much easier to do. We created loads of charts, graphs, and things like that to hold the information. We then put all of the charts, graphs, and writing in one big presentation.
We also did a prototype version of the website which is shown at the end of the presentation. Ten members of Challenge 5 worked on a page each. The pages are colour coded with the navigation (worked on by three members, two for the navigation, one for the site logo).
Then, Nick changed the fonts, and added extra features (his eye’s hurt at the end of the day)!
At 11:15 we got certificates, one each and one for the school. We also got a goody bag and then we said ‘goodbye’ and left, and Nick snuck a pack of biscuits out (and left loads of crumbs in my car! - Mr. Ross)
