A close up of an agile wallaby.
This one was quite friendly and came right up to me to have its close-up taken,
much to the envy of the other people around me. |
Here is another of the tiny macropods. These are quokkas.
They are just the cutest little guys and very curious. I kept taking pictures
as they came closer in case they fled, but they got closer and closer. |
See. Here is a quokka close up. |
And, even closer.
|
An Australian black swan.
It looks like a white swan, but it is black. |
After the zoo, we went back to the hotel to rest before venturing out again
to the Sydney Aquarium - it is open late. |
This was the first thing we saw, and I could have watched them all night.
Here is a platypus searching for prey. They are acrobatic swimmers. I will
try to post a video clip later
that
shows
this.
They are
going after
the
fish
and
crayfish.

A saltwater crocodile. Alligators are afraid of people, this guy thinks
people are food.
They had a great sign at the top of the open enclosure saying, "If the fall doesn't
kill you, the crocodile will" -- it's true. |
Beth next to a barrimundi (the giant crappie) and lungfish (with the glowing eye resting on the bottom). The barrimundi is a common food fish on the menus.
|
Another Australian lungfish. It has gills, but can also breath air when it needs to.
|
A Darwin prawn. They are tasty; we had some later that night.
|
The Sydney Aquarium has a tunnel through a tank of sharks and rays. It
was quite an experience.
They had eerie horror movie music playing the background. |
Here is a wobbegong shark. It lives on the bottom and waits for prey to
come along.
Here is it resting on the top of tunnel, giving us a view of its underside. |
Beth is looking up at a gray nurse shark.
|
A ray resting on the tunnel.
|
A lion fish.
I have another video clip of several of these fish swimming in a tall tanking.
It was very relaxing. |
Beth watching a large community tank of large fish.

After the aquarium we went to a restaurant in the Darling Harbour area near
the Aquarium. It had great seafood. This is a fountain
outside the aquarium. It shows cranes in their mating ritual. |
