TIMALIIDAE

  • Sulawesi Babbler Trichastoma celebense: We saw at least two subspecies. Those in the south at Karaenta Forest belong to the subspecies finschi which shows rusty underparts. Those in the north at Dumoga Bone belong to the subspecies celebense which shows off white underparts. I am unsure as to whether the birds at Lore Lindu are the latter form or rufofuscum which is intermediate between the two.
  • Malia Malia grata: An interesting taxonomic problem. Is it a babbler? Is it a bulbul? I certainly think that its behaviour is more that of a babbler (almost laughing thrush-like). Some nice views of noisy flocks at Lore Lindu.

  • Great Shortwing Heinrichia calligyna: Another splendid species that gave a great performance at Anaso after some tense moments! This species is named after Heinrich, a German collector, who worked in the Moluccas and Sulawesi between 1930 and 1932.
Great
Shortwing
  • Sulawesi Thrush (S Mountain T) Cataponera turdoides: A brief encounter on our first visit to Anaso was supplemented by stunning views of a singing bird that responded very well to some speculative tape playing!
  • Pied Chat (P Bush-chat) Saxicola caprata

ACANTHIZIDAE

  • Flyeater (Golden-bellied F, G-b Gerygone) Gerygone sulphurea: Looks brighter than and sings slightly differently to birds from elsewhere in Asia. The form concerned, flaveola, is endemic to the Sulawesi subregion.

SYLVIIDAE

  • Chestnut-backed Bush-Warbler Bradypterus castaneus: Some great views up at Anaso of this surprisingly attractive species. The underparts are greyer than illustrated in the field guide.
  • Gray’s Grasshopper Warbler Locustella fasciolata: Heard by most and seen by one group at the pass above the lodge on Halmahera. Subspecific identity is not possible in the field but from my brief research it seems that the Stepanyan’s/Gray’s split is at best a bit debatable.
  • Clamorous Reed Warbler Acrocephalus stentoreus: Another write-in as a result of our time around Ujung Pandang. The endemic subspecies concerned is celebensis.
  • Mountain Tailorbird Orthotomus cuculatus: The Sulawesi form, which is common at Anaso in Lore Lindu NP is quite distinctive. Who knows, another future split?
  • Sulawesi Leaf Warbler Phylloscopus sarasinorum: Several good views in Lore Lindu NP. A fairly drab, chunky-billed phyllosc.

CISTICOLIDAE

  • Zitting Cisticola Cisticola juncidis
  • Golden-headed Cisticola (Bright-capped C) Cisticola exilis.

MUSCICAPIDAE

  • ‘Sulawesi’ Flycatcher Muscicapa sp.nov.: We were lucky to get great views of this yet to be described flycatcher in a mixed flock near to Kamarora in Lore Lindu NP. The original note about this new species was in Forktail 15, a publication of Oriental Bird Club.
'Sulawesi'
Flycatcher
  • Island Verditer Flycatcher Eumyias panayensis
  • Snowy-browed Flycatcher Ficedula hyperythra
  • Rufous-throated Flycatcher Ficedula rufigula: Great views of this skulking flycatcher low down in Lore Lindu NP.
  • Little Pied Flycatcher Ficedula westermanni
  • Blue-fronted Flycatcher Cyornis hoevelli: Some nice looks up at Anaso.
  • Sulawesi Blue Flycatcher Cyornis omissus: Several good views including a female at Kamarora and a few on the road at Dongi Dongi.
