my father would say
just a revenue play
more cards and grills sold for the old man
and so it may be
every day should be fathers day
and mothers and childrens day
a world of deep respect within the family
he glimpsed that place in the space
between two worlds

to him it was as if catholics had a pope day

so to give in to the special day scam
meant to admit you're above all else
irrelevant
so he was never a celebrant

for me it was different
all i wanted was to see my two girls
be together like buddies pals
no trash talk just walk almost arm in arm
looking at flea market goods
looking at the same thing at the same time
trinkets and doodads and oddities
hearing each other out
pretty much ignoring me
and i was blessed to see
how it might yet be for them
friends and sisters and daughters of mine
for fathers day that was perfect and fine
