a passage whether embraced or rejected
as meaningless drivel you were directed
to attend and be part
and so you did
and so it is a passage
a symbol a rite as tonight you receive
a small slip of paper
that says you are done
and begun wherever your next steps may go
wherever your wings may fly you
this was not ideal for you
much of life is not ideal
a job a spouse a town a country
rarely feel ideal
there is not much perfect
i have observed
but there is the truth
and this above all
to thine own self be true
says old polonius
the true you will fly where you wish
and we who love you in this world
stand to help you when you have need
part of being true is knowing when to ask
there is no shame in that
so ask and laugh and dream
and do what it is you do
that grows you every day
