The upper waterfall seen from Artist Point
The nature itself of the ground is changing in Yellowstone
From columnar basalt to wide prairies , from lava to granite,
from soft yellow tuffs to hard red rocks
from yellow tuff to pink tuff
from wet canyons to dry cliffs
to healthy forest showing the three tree generations
These goats are called bighorn sheep
not because of this one of course !
Once again, do you notice how the fur colour imitates the surrouding grass
When they do not move, they are really hard to notice !
How to distinguish it from the rocks ?
What is impressing to me as well, is the agility and the ease
they exhibit on these steep slopes
From a dry mountain to a hole in the ground , splashing boiling water !
Smelling sulphurs , hissing , gargling
From a puddle of gargling water to a small volcano of hissing steam !
They also provoke a rain that stain cars and cameras due to high mineral content
Constant in this variety, the smell ! Beuark !
Be brave ! Don't breathe and smile !
Well, this give a change of smell, a good one !
Notice the smoke on the left ? Do I have to say it ?
They are potentially dangerous, but most of the time they are calm, placid
ruminating, sleeping, walking to better pasture. But still so impressive !
Calm horizontal river landscape and ...
agressive vertical cliff .
From soft hay to columnar basalt
Columnar basalt and river in canyon of volcanic tuff.
Detail of previous corniche
and mesa landscape .
The hard basalt protects the soft tuff from the rains
Green trees, blue river, yellow tuff on one side and pink on other side
Which color defines best Yellowstone ?
These ducks have an answer .
And that squirrel too .
I am not good at bird's name, ...
...so I'll let you guess !
How can they do this ?
Yellowstone is as famous as this geyser : the Old Faithful .
Erupting every 90 minutes approx, it propels up to 8400gal (32000L) of boiling
water to an average height of 145 ft (44m) during 1.5 to 5 minutes.
Old Faithful is not the tallest nor the largest, but the most predictable.
Turquoise and orange/red ! What are Yellowstone colours ?
Green and Yellow/brown
Green and white. The high sulphur contents attacks some trees
Wapitis of Mammoth Springs are so used to the city , they often rest on lawns
I prefer the woods, and wilder animals
even if they escape
when we attempt to approach
Green, yellow .... At this point, we are going to Grand Teton
and will come back to Yellowstone . _ You may do the same ! _
