Catching up

Catching up on my work and personal logs, using my personal log to summarize both.

It's been a very rough few weeks since my last entries. After the AGU meeting in New Orleans, I continued looking at LET data, but I also had to take a few hours off to see my ophthalmologis and my primary doctor, and to make my first visit to a dentist in years. Got cleanings and fillings.

On 6/23-6/25, I had three midnight to 8 AM shifts at JPL, helping out with the STEREO HET/LET thermal vacuum tests. Basically, I kept track of temperatures during transitions between CPTs (comprehensive performance tests), and I told the JPL technician when we needed temperatures changed on the shroud or heat exchanger. The problem is that those late night shifts wiped me out, and the fatigue was compounded by the fact that one of our was putting up a new roof, which made it impossible for me to get good sleep during the day.

Later, I got very ill. At first, I thought I was just tired from the JPL thermal vac shifts, but I eventually realized that my fatigue was too extreme to be just being tired from work. I had a fever and some muscle aches, so I put it up to a virus, and I got better in three or four days.

Unfortunately, all that downtime zapped any chance of my getting my papers for the ICRC done. I e-mailed for an extension beyond the 6/30 deadline, and the organizers gave a general extension to 7/5/05. Further, they told me that I could submit confirming abstracts (which I did on 7/1), and if I turned in a paper by 7/20, it would be on the CD. If I turned in a paper before the conference, it would be in the final printed proceedings. Good enough for me.
