Catching up, Part IV
See my Personal log for a lot of
catching up since the last entry in this log.
Last week, after I got back from our vacation in
San Diego, I spoke with Mark, who had been unaware that I had been on
vacation.
He wanted to verify that I
had set up a seminar for September 22 at noon. A visitor from JPL will be
giving a talk on some detector
development.
Further, he wanted to get
started on retesting some leftover LET L3 detectors in the Room 228 thermal
vacuum setup. I got the detectors installed and the system running last Friday
(9/9/05). Four of the detectors seem stable (L3-09, -10, 2128-11C, 2128-13C),
and the other four (L3-08, L3-11, L3-12, L3-16) have growing leakage
currents.
Furthermore, he wanted me to
restart my efforts in CRIS penetrating particles. Apparently, Frank McDonald
would be interested.
Finally, he
pointed out that one sixth of my salary is being paid by the ultra-thin silicon
detector grant. I was unaware of this. He wanted to know if I wanted to be
involved, and I said
yes.

Also,
before I left on vacation, Dick suggested I submit an AGU abstract on the
limitations imposed on acceleration times by our low Q(Fe) measurements for the
January 20, 2005 SEP event. I had talked about this at the end of my ICRC talk,
so I agreed to do it. After returning from the vacation, I circulated an
abstract to the usual suspects, and I submitted it by deadline on Thursday last
week.
