God's Plan

Speaking of the Christian Reconstructionist's and their forays into politics:

"These guys are really good at what they do," says Barry Lynn, a lawyer and United Church of Christ minister who heads Americans United for Separation of Church and State. "This is not the Ronald Reagan era where they just had part of a plan."

Lynn sees these various "court-stripping" moves as part of a larger rightwing strategy of desecularizing government. The right insists it is protecting religious freedom from, in Indiana Rep. John Hostettler's words, "the fickle sentiments of as few as five people in black robes." Whichever side you're rooting for, even a rank layman has to doubt the constitutionality of telling the Supreme Court it may not hear a whole vast, vague range of First Amendment cases.
