There's Too Much Confusion...For those of you who are BSG fans, I hope you
caught last week's episode, "No Exit." If not, be warned. There be mild
spoilers ahead. Probably some in the comments as well, assuming there are
comments.
I used to have grad seminars with a professor who would, for about 3 hours at a time, just do a brain dump on any topic. If you were lucky, you might catch about 20 percent of what he was going on about. Those of us lucky enough to experience the fun of these marathons of exposition gave the experience a name, verbing the professors last name, which I'll be circumspect enough not to divulge here. We'd walk out of the room sweaty, with that dazed and confused look, mumbling to each other, "I've just been -----ed." Well this week BSG fans got Andered and Tighed, as Sam Anders and Ellen Tigh plugged into our little monkey brains and downloaded great heaping terabytes of backstory. I think I finally (after a second watching) figured most of it out, though the timelines don't really make sense. I'm not sure if they're supposed to not make sense, or if it was just a continuity problem and they're going to ignore some of the things they said earlier in the series. Anyway, the dates don't make complete sense, but the rest of it was interesting. Note to future sci-fi writers: If you want to get yourself out of a jam with timelines, consider relativity, it may get you out of a jam. Oh, and don't forget this conversation from Doctor Who: Doctor: People don't understand time. It's not what you think it is. Sally: Then what is it? Doctor: Complicated. Sally: Tell me. Doctor: Very complicated. Sally: I'm clever, and I'm listening, and don't patronize me because people have died and I'm not happy. Tell me. Doctor: People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect... but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly.... timey-wimey.... stuff. Sally: Yeah, I've seen this bit before. You said that sentence got away from you. Doctor: It got away from me yeah.... For some additional thoughts on the episode, here's a great article from Maureen Ryan at the Trib that answers some viewer questions. Still lots of questions left to answer, though: What the heck is Starbuck? Why did the 13 Colonies leave Kobol in the first place? Why doesn't a group of folks steeped in Greek mythology have an Oedipus story? (They could use the lesson, it seems.) Who were the "messengers"? What do you get when you cross a Battlestar with a Baseship? What the frak is up with Baltar, Head Six, Head Baltar, and all that stuff? And of course the big question, will Bear McCreary have to compose a penny whistle and taiko drum inspired rendition of "Oh Danny Boy"? Posted: Tue - February 17, 2009 at 10:19 AM |
