Vexille...When Brian rents movies, you never know what he's
going to bring home.
Last time he went to Blockbuster he got In Bruges (not bad) and Vexille. Vexille was visually spectacular Japanese animation. (Not being an expert, I'm not sure if it actually counts as anime, since the style is so different.) Vexille is the story of a woman (Vexille) who is a soldier in SWORD a high tech American military organization that is charged with finding out what's going on in Japan, which has completely closed itself off from the outside world for 10 years as they pursue illegal robot technology. As Brian remarked, it is a story as an 8 year old would tell it: no plot, all exposition. "And then this happened....and then this happened...." Plus it's mostly just a series of cool set pieces used to show off the animation. There's a scene stolen from Mad Max, there are giant worms stolen from Dune (but made of metal), etc., etc., etc. But in spite of the weaknesses of the story, it's still incredibly fun to watch. Any movie in which a villain escapes a building by having a plane cut it in half with its wing is my kind of movie. Posted: Wed - July 23, 2008 at 08:44 AM |
