Going Galt...You may have heard some so-called conservatives
lately talking about "Going Galt." I'll leave it to you to google the phrase if
you're unfamiliar with it, but it's based on the book Atlas Shrugged by
Ayn Rand, or as we like to call her around our house, "that misanthropic
coke-addled bitch." Anyway, some small group of so-called conservatives are
suggesting that they desire to leave our evil society behind in the same way
that Galt and his followers in Rand's book
did.
Unfortunately for these egotistical little spoiled brats, the problem with the analogy is that in Rand's book, it was people who actually matter, the people without whom society could not function that took themselves out of the equation. What happens if the eager acolytes of Limbaugh and Palin check out? Other than John Stewart having to go look for new material, I think the answer is, "Not much" or perhaps "More parking spaces." Or to put all that more succinctly: "There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs." Posted: Mon - March 23, 2009 at 05:00 PM |
