It's a Thin Line Between Love and Hate ...With all due respect to one of my favorite Divas,
Annie Lennox ... No, it isn't a thin line between love and
hate.
Michael Adee, of MoreLight Presbyterians writes about the spiritual violence done to LGBT people in the marriage debate, and he's stirred up a bit of a controversy among some in the PC(USA). (And by "controversy", I mean "let's deflect attention from the argument by playing word games.") The responses range from actually trying to argue that the objections to marriage in this country are not primarily religious (oh really?!) to the ever-popular, "We don't hate homosexuals, we love them!" Funny. Could have fooled us. It doesn't help that such statements are usually followed by the ever popular reference to the "the homosexual agenda" which is simply the latest incarnation of "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion." I wonder what sort of arrogance it takes, what sort of hubris is required for someone to so completely believe their own rhetoric that they simply refuse to hear anything else. Feel free to call your hate "love" if you want, but in either case, please stop inflicting it on us. It's one thing to say to a 4 year old, "I know what's best for you, so even if you don't like it, I'm still doing this out of concern for you." It's a far different thing to say such things to grown adults. I believe that most grown adults actually do know the difference between love and hate, particularly when either one is directed at them. Isn't it curious though, that the fundies believe that, even though the objects of their deep and abiding love continually call that love "hate", the fundies believe that they know better. Apparently we're all so deluded or stupid that we don't know the difference between love and hate when it's directed at us. Nor are we clever enough to know violence when we see it. Not only are we miserable sinners because we're gay, these folks want to make sure we know that we cannot even be responsible for our very own feelings. Not only do they want to control our lives out in the world, they want to dictate our emotional lives as well. Just another step in their continuing attempts to set themselves up as God. And if you call them on this arrogance, they tell you that you're the one who hates. Seriously. That's their response. It's the ever popular "I know you are but what am I?" response. Every time I hear it, I fully expect it to be followed by an invitation to settle the argument out by the teeter-totters after recess. The only possible response to that sort of juvenile stupidity from those claim to love us so much is: "If you love the gays so much, why don't you marry one?" Seriously, Reverend, why won't you marry us? Oh right, because we're trying to destroy marriage. Keep your love, folks. I'll take my rights. Thanks. Posted: Tue - March 31, 2009 at 08:10 AM |
