The Three Days of Brian-ukkah
Brian's birthday was this weekend,
and obviously it is an event too important to be contained in just one day, thus
the three days of Brian-ukkah.
Friday we had our weekly Friday night outing with friends, though the crowd was much larger than usual. Cocktails, dinner, fun and frivolity. Much to our surprise, we found out that some of our Ann Arbor friends didn't know some of our Jackson friends, so it was nice that they all got a chance to meet. On Saturday we went to the second annual Main Street potluck/picnic where we got to meet a few more of our neighbors. We continue to be pleasantly pleased at how universally friendly our neighbors are. I overheard a couple of our neighbors discussing BSG, and we had similarly geeky conversation with another neighbor, so it's good to know we're not the only geeks in the neighborhood. That will come in handy when we finally build a 1/24th scale replica of the Galactica in our front yard (either that or the full scale statue of Laura Roslin.) More talk of the potential Walgreen coming to Chelsea, right at the entrance to our neighborhood. We're in full NIMBY mode. Do we really need a Walgreen right across the street from a huge (and ugly) CVS, and from Chelsea Pharmacy? Just how many pharmacies does one tiny city need? When CVS moved in they promised to build a building that fit with the local character. Either they lied, they tried and failed, or they think that Chelsea's local character is "crap-tacular suburban tacky." Anyway, we probably can't keep Walgreen out, but maybe we can at least get them to do something that isn't similarly tacky. That evening we had yet another fabulous dinner at eve in Ann Arbor. Of particular note was the "spa martini" composed of Grey Goose, lemon juice, simple syrup, and a cucumber slice. The lemon juice was perfectly balanced with the simple syrup so there was no acidic taste at all, just bright lemon flavor. The cucumber slice didn't add any taste to the beverage, but I could smell it every time I took a sip. As Brian noted, this is why those folks who compete in cocktail-making competitions actually know what they're doing, as opposed to us folks who just throw some liquor and juice in a glass and call it a martini. And, no trip to eve is complete without the triple chocolate pots de creme for dessert. When we finally rolled home we had the mid-season cliffhanger of BSG waiting on our TiVo. If I had one word to describe the episode, that word would be, "I don't frakin' believe it." Sunday, the Brian-ukkah festivities continued with a lovely day spent at our friends' cottage on Portage Lake. We neatly avoided the couple of little storms that flew through during the day, got a little too much sun (I'm officially a redneck now), and ate too much (as usual.) So, the Festival of Brian has concluded for another year. Hope you celebrated it with appropriate reverence. Posted: Mon - June 16, 2008 at 10:17 AM |
