There's a Sad Sort of Clanging from the Clock in the Hall...

On Friday night we helped throw a going away party for one of our best friends who is moving to Connecticut in just a few weeks. This is the second going away party we've been to in three weeks. It is also almost exactly a year since another best friend moved out of town.

There was a time, not that many years ago, when Brian and I could show up at our usual watering hole and know nearly everyone there. Not anymore, though. Now we rarely know more than two or three people there. That's one of the big downsides of living in a college town -- lots of people are only here for a few years, then they move away. Of course, new people move in, but they stay the same age as we keep getting older. (And by "we" I mean Brian. I, on the other hand, sleep in a cryogenic chamber filled with an inert atmosphere and when possible I imbibe the essence of Gelflings. That's another big downside of living in a college town: it's like Logan's Run around here.)

Fortunately most of our friends were townies, and for several years we got a reprieve from having friends constantly moving out of town. But with the Michigan economy in free-fall, even the townies aren't sticking around these days.

With luck we'll be gone ASAP too. It's about time. I think we've pretty much used Ann Arbor up.

Regretfully they tell us [Cuckoo, Cuckoo]
But firmly they compel us [Cuckoo, Cuckoo]
To say goodbye ...
