In-de-schism 2006More church news.
Well that report I mentioned yesterday, the
"Peace, Unity, and Purity" report passed. So I guess a whopping 115 churches
may eventually talk about possibly deciding to study the idea of
leaving.
Listening to some of the proceedings on the web yesterday, it was amusing to hear a bunch of WASPS talk about "the Korean churches" and the "African American churches" leaving the denomination, and then getting appropriately spanked by African American and Korean commissioners for stereotyping them all as a group. In other news, the General Assembly smacked down a proposal that went so far as to state that even domestic partnerships, civil unions, etc. were naughty. Don't ever believe the folks who say "This is only about the definition of traditional marriage." They don't mean it. We've certainly learned that here in Michigan. However, the prohibition against the ordination of the queers will remain in the Book of Order. On the other hand, the PUP report may offer a way around that prohibition for individual governing bodies to decide that such a prohibition isn't fundamental. (Which it ain't. duh.) Personally, I've been arguing that "local option" is and has been the Presbyterian way for a couple centuries, and this returns us to that historical stance. So I'm more pleased about these outcomes than many on either the far left or the far right. Personally, I'm interested to see what the far left and far right will do now. They've been arguing for so long, I suspect they won't stop, even though this is probably the best compromise they can hope for. Have both groups played the professional victim for so long that they can't give it up? Time will tell. In other church news, the Episcopalians are standing their ground and not apologizing for, nor renouncing the ordination of queer bishops. Note: Here's a post I wrote quite a long time ago, that's a primer for people wanting to understand what's going on in the PCUSA. Even though it was written almost 2 years ago, it's still pretty accurate. There are a few other posts scattered around in which I discuss these issues in the PCUSA.
