News from the Presbyterian world...

tidbits of various church news...

I haven't written about the Presbyterian Church (USA) in a while, so I thought I'd update folks on a few things, in case you're interested.

1) The charges against Rev. Rigby (brought against him for performing same-sex marriages) have been dismissed. This makes, according to my count, about 800 gajllion of these charges filed by "conservatives" in the church, all of which have essentially gone nowhere. So, while charge after charge is filed by the Modern-Day Witch-Burning Puritans of our denomination, consistently, the rest of the church ignores them.

2) The charges against our Pastor for participating in our wedding have also been dismissed. If I were five, I'd point at the "conservatives" and say, "Nya nya nya nya nyaaaah nyaaaah!" But I'm not five, so I won't say that.

3) Still no charges against yours truly ... even though I'm ordained, married, and a big ol' 'mo. If I were five, I'd point at the "conservatives" and say, "Chicken!! Bwock! Bwock! Bwock!" (This would be accompanied by putting my thumbs in my armpits and flapping my arms.) But I'm not five, so I won't say that either.

4) Our Lord and Savior was asked to comment on all this stupid religious legalism. Jesus yawned.

5) "Conservatives" in the PCUSA are threatening schism this summer at our biannual General Assembly. For a while I was disheartened with the idea of splitting apart the church. Then I remembered "The Trust Clause." The Trust Clause means that any church building is actually owned by the denomination and not the individual church. So, a church can leave the denomination, but they can't take the building with them. I've noticed that many liberal churches are in silly looking, badly designed buildings, generally with that awful 60's "Mod" architecture. Meanwhile many conservative churches have great old buildings. So I say, let them leave. I want their churches when they're gone. Schism is a small price to pay for beautiful stained glass rose windows and big pipe organs.

6) Our Pastor was just featured in an Ann Arbor News article. He's decided to stop legally sanctioning heterosexual weddings. That is, he'll perform the ceremony (just as we perform wedding ceremonies of same-sex couples at our church) but if a straight couple actually wants the legal document signed that makes them married, they'll have to go elsewhere. This is his protest against state-sanctioned discrimination against same-sex couples. Interesting idea ... not sure I agree with it, but I certainly appreciate his stand for justice. In spite of all the silliness from the right-wing nutjobs, good things do indeed still happen in churches. You just have to find the right church.
