| Website recommendations, part II | | Date Created: Apr 13, 2005, 10:16 AM |
In my last website recommendation post, I mentioned Epicurious.com, the fabulous recipe site (and so much more!) Then I turned that post into an opportunity to harangue my 5 regular readers about cooking at home. I suppose that was bad manners.
Today, instead of serving up a yummy food site with a side of guilt, I thought I'd serve you: Miss Manners.
I'm not sure what I enjoy most about Miss Manner's columns. Is it the helpful and practical advice on how to deal with the fact that every stranger and their cousin wants to hug me these days? Is it her amusing tone? Or is it the awful questions people ask her? I'm not sure which part I like best ... it's all good.
One of the interesting things about manners is that, although it is perfectly OK to correct a young person about their poor behavior (in private, if at all possible), it is bad manners to correct another adult about their manners -- particularly in public. This is a behavior I love to witness (ie. read that "eavesedrop on" -- my bad manners showing). I find that typically, there are a group of teenagers at a cafe or restaurant. One of them will have done something foul, and another (who has decided that he or she is more "adult" than his or her comrades) will then lecture the entire table for 10 minutes on what bad manners that behavior was ... thus exposing his or her bad manners for all to see.
But because "manners" are something that are often seen as something unknowable and arcane (rather than the "commonsense social grease" that they actually are), the other teenagers tolerate the behavior quietly. (Which is, ironically, good manners.)
Anyway, find the answers to all your questions from Miss Manners. However, I should point out that there are some social situations she does not address. For those, gentle reader, you will have to seek other sources.
