How happy is the blameless vestal's lot!
The world forgetting, by the world forgot.
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!
Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd; -- Alexander Pope Eloisa to Abelard?
I really hate movies with Jim Carrey. From The Mask, to Batman Forever, to The Grinch, to Bruce Almighty and The Truman Show. He annoys me. His manner is so distracting that I couldn't conceive of a movie that I would enjoy if he were in it. His comedy roles are indistinguishable from his so-called "dramatic" roles.
Ok. I'm man enough to admit when I'm wrong. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a wonderful movie, even with Jim Carrey in it. And, he does a great job. There, I've said it. But don't expect me to watch another movie of his...he still has to earn forgiveness for destroying The Grinch. (I don't mean he destroyed that movie. It was a trainwreck with or without him, but he destroyed my image of the Grinch himself.)
So this is a movie about a man and woman who spend a couple years together. Eventually, the bloom is off the rose and they start annoying each other as couples do. He's shy and she's gregarious. He loves too easily, she's cautious.
So, she has him erased from her memory.
I don't want to give away the rest of the movie, so I'll say no more about the plot.
The direction is brilliant. This movie is a lot like Enigma: not told chronologically. There are several movies that have done this lately, for better or worse. For some, it's only a gimmick. For this movie, it works perfectly. If this isn't done right it does nothing but confuse. In this case, enough clues are left along the way for the viewer to see what's going on.
The simple camera tricks, forced perspective, and other low tech special effects are really wonderfully done and contribute to the simplicity of the movie.
Go out and rent it! Now. Really, I mean it.
