We all know that major news organizations are afraid to ask the tough questions of the Bush Administration for fear of being shut out.
Now, we find out that the Bush Administration is paying columnists to shill for them too. The Washington Post reports that conservative columnist Maggie Gallagher, who has written more columns against gay marriage than I can count, was actually on the Administration payroll to promote their "healthy marriage" initiative. (Healthy marriage by the way is apparently code for "no gay marriage.")
Gallagher had an interview on CNN this morning that was terrible. Not because she's terrible (she is...but it isn't like she's the Anti-Christ that Ann Coulter is) but the CNN chick (and I use that term intentionally) just sat there for 5 minutes of an 8 minute interview and let her (Gallagher) talk without asking any questions. CNN sucks...they can't even ask the tough questions of other journalists.
Bush now says -- in one of the few press conferences he's ever had -- that he wants "a nice, independent relationship between the White House and the press." Yeah sure. I'm sure Karl Rove does too. I guess independent means, "We lie to you, you print it without question." Status quo.
Spin is one thing, but this is something different. There's a word for this, but I can't quite remember...oh yeah, Propaganda. I'd be more incensed if I weren't so not surprised. |
