Avoiding the RNC...

I bet you're thinking a bleeding-heart liberal like me is going to blog about the Republican National Convention. Well you're wrong. I didn't get a press pass to blog at the RNC. In fact, I'm not even in New York, and I wouldn't go to the convention if I were. (For the record, if I were in NYC right now, I'd go see "Naked Boys Singing" in protest of the Convention. Apparently hookers are OK with Republicans, but naked boys are not.) I haven't watched a minute of the Convention, and I don't plan too. That isn't what's stopping me from blogging about the convention, though because I have learned from conservatives that you don't actually have to see a particular TV show, movie, or art exhibition to criticize it. But I won't write about the convention. Instead, I thought I'd include some other news here because it's obvious that, other than the Convention, the networks aren't going to mention any other story unless it contains the words "Swift Boat."

1) The total number of wounded soldiers in Iraq is approaching 7000, and the total number of killed is approaching 1000. The press has yet to show even one coffin. In Michigan, our Governor (I love you, Jennifer!) has ordered that US flags be flown at half-staff when a Michigan resident is killed while on active duty. However, Michigan Republicans claim that such action "undermines the war effort." Yeah...Republicans are the ones who support the troops. Right.

2) The New York Times reports that the Bush Administration has come to the mind-shattering conclusion that global warming is real -- though the President has not. The Administration has produced a report that "indicated that emmissions of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases were the only likely explanation for global warming over the last three decades." Welcome to 20th Century Science, Mr. Bush! Apparently this report was signed by the Secretaries of Energy, Commerce, and Bush's science advisor.

When a reporter asked Bush why the administration had changed its position (ie. flip-flopped), Bush replied, "Ah, we did?"

2) Reuters reports that, "One day after saying the war on terror could not be won, President Bush sought on Tuesday to calm a political storm over his comments and said America would prevail." (What's that sound? Oh, right...flip-flopping)

And there are still undecided voters in this country?!

3) Oh, and in response to my question the other day, "Where is Colin Powell?" It seems he was planning to visit Athens for the closing cermonies of the Olympics, but cancelled the visit because the Greeks were going to protest, according to AP. And I thought it was only Bush who was so thin-skinned.

Best quote of the week (this one's just for you, boss): While on "Face the Nation" discussing whether or not the Bush Administration is behind the "Swift Boat" ads, Senator Hillary Clinton responded, "Well, if you see a turtle on a fence post, you know it didn't get there by itself."

So, I've been avoiding the RNC coverage on TV because, well, because I try not to intentionally make myself sick. Instead, I watched Bill Maher's show, "Real Time,"
on HBO last night. His rant about the New York protests at the RNC was classic. Don't get me wrong, I'm a pacifist and don't advocate violence, but it was still a great rant.
An exerpt:
"Therefore, tonight, I am urging all the protesters in New York next week to riot! I'm talking about good old-fashioned rioting, the kind that made whitey move to the suburbs. Look, protester, you spent two weeks making that papier-mâché Dick Cheney mask. Now light it on fire and torch the nearest GAP store. Two lesbians with a "Lick Bush" sign is not going to make the "Nightly News." Pick up a garbage can and throw it through a Starbucks window! I don't want to see a candlelight vigil. This is New York; there's a body count at Simon and Garfunkel concerts..."
