A Decade...

10 years ago today I met my husband, Brian. We've been together ever since. Both of us describe the experience the same way: it was as if God knocked us in the head with a hammer and said, "Hey! Pay attention to this ... it's important." Fortunately neither of us needed a burning bush to figure out what was going on.

When people ask how long we've been together, and I tell them, the first thing they say is "Congratulations!" I always feel a little strange getting congratulated for simply staying together, or getting congratulated for something that seems as natural to me as breathing: being with Brian. Frankly, if anyone deserves congratulations, it should be Brian for putting up with me. I'm just thankful that he's decided to stick around and put up with my peculiarities.

What is somewhat more puzzling is that those wishes of congratulations are almost always from other gay guys who seem to assume that such a long time together is rare. In fact, of our friends who are in relationships, the majority of them have been together for many years, some far longer than we have. Certainly not a statistical sample, but if I know so many long-term couples especially given the transitory nature of the Ann Arbor community, I have to believe that long term relationships really aren't as rare as we are led to believe. If you're only hanging out in bars, a venue where single people hang out in order to meet other single people, then perhaps that is also not a statistical sample and maybe that accounts for our perception that long-term gay relationships are rare.

Anyway...today is our anniversary. Or at least, one of them: the anniversary of when we met. We celebrate others, such as our wedding anniversary. It's been a decade, and I sometimes joke, "It only seems like forever" but, in fact, it seems like such a short time. (Cue "Sunrise, Sunset")

Happy Anniversary, sweetie. Here's to seventy times seven more. Now, put your shoes away.
