Take famed Italian actress Eleonora Duse, mix with two aristocratic Bolivians, a man nicknamed Monkeyface, a bearded lady, a hermaphrodite nun, the Cuban Secret Police, a hot communist, a murder and several orgies. Heat and serve in 1920's Cuba.
The Last Masquerade is a wonderful book about two Bolivians who have set out to see Eleonora Duse's farewell tour in Cuba. That's it -- that's the plot. Along the way there is murder, intrigue, family warring, obsession, communism, and enough characters to populate two Russian novels. The plot, though simple is interesting and the characters are wonderful. I especially liked the journal-like monologues that open each chapter, given by Ms. Duse.
Not one of the best gay novels I've read, but certainly better than most.
