The Workplace Religious Freedom Act of 2005 was introduced in both the Senate (S 677) and the House (HR 1445) a few months ago. This act would require private employers to accomodate the religious observances of their employees, within reason.
Sounds like a nice act, right? Sure it is. Who could possibly argue against it? If you're against it, then you are probably against religion, against God, against apple pie, and you probably intentionally step on cracks.
My problem with it? Well, I don't really have a problem with the bill itself, except that it is so vague as to make enforcement either 1) nearly impossible or 2) all-to-easy. My only problem is that this bill will likely pass through no problem. Meanwhile, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act has been in front of Congress for about a zillion years without passing (I'm not even sure it's been introduced in this session -- I wasn't able to tell from the HRC website.)
Contact your legislators. Now. Tell them to support non-discrimination legislation for LGBT folks.
(While you're at it, you may want to voice your support for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Apparently, since Bush/Rove & Co. haven't been able to kill Osama, they're going after Big Bird instead.) |
