The Ann Arbor Civic theater staged its production of Cabaret last weekend. Brian and I saw a matinee on Saturday afternoon.
For a largely very young cast (with the exceptions of the actors who played Fraulein Schneider and Herr Schultz), I thought they all did a wonderful job. This production was staged almost exactly the same as the production in NYC -- very sexualized and gritty. (Unfortunately, unlike the NYC production, there were no martinis served during the show.)
I forgot how chilling the "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" number is. (Especially when you've recruited a bunch of 8th graders to play Hitler youth.)
My only problem with the performance was that the entire cast was miked. Several of us were complaining about this after the performance. The show was in the Mendelson theater, a very small space (maybe a couple hundred seats). With such a small house, there's really no reason these folks needed to be miked (and with such ugly, obvious headset microphones, at that.) Maybe people just need to learn to project and annunciate. Just a thought.
Otherwise, it was very well done. I'd recommend you see it, but it isn't playing any more. However, if you've only ever seen the movie, I do suggest you see the play sometime -- they're very different.
