So I heard the other day that my alma mater is hosting the Idiot-in-Chief during commencement this spring.
Now, given the evangelical, conservative, Christian nature of Calvin, you might think everyone there would be all giddy with anticip.......ation, and sweaty with conservative churnings deep in their tightly bound loins.
But you'd be wrong. In a move that makes me almost proud to be a graduate of Calvin (almost, but not quite) there seems to be quite a bit of disatisfaction with the choice. (Unlike many schools, the graduating class doesn't get to pick the speaker at Calvin ... at least, we didn't.) They've even set up a website to vent.
Nice to see even evangelicals can understand that having politicians hijack religion for their own twisted purposes is, in fact, a really bad idea. Actually, Calvin's Reformed traditions have very little in common with the anti-intellectualism of Bush's fundamentalism/smarm (I haven't yet decided whether I believe Bush's religious ramblings are real, or just more Karl Rove machinations. I'm fairly certain that Bush himself doesn't believe anything, but is just a tabla rasa for the neocons to write their evil upon.) So you might even say that these protesters are upholding traditional Reformed ideas by protesting the Shrub.
Good for them. |
