Here are my answers to the "20 Questions" meme posted yesterday. You all ask great questions! Here's the first twenty:
From Bonnie:
1. (strictly theoretical) - You and a Focus on the Family person die (not any time soon please, that's the theoretical part). You both turn up at the pearly gates at the same time. What do you think happens?
Well, I hate to say it, but I'd probably kick the shit out of 'em. Yeah, I know, not very mature, but hey, I've already made it to the Pearly Gates, right? So I'm probably not going to get sent downstairs. And, I doubt I'd get the chance to do it once I was inside (the wings would get in the way.) Then, while they were recovering from the major ass whoopin' I just gave them, I'd point out the obvious: I was a bonesmoker in life and I'm right up there with 'em anyway -- and that they really missed out on a lot of fun.
Yes, that's all very childish.
2. (seriously, now...) Faith. Is it something you grew up with, or something you grew into? And if I'm not cheating - particularly if the answer is "grew up with" - ever have any times when you really found yourself doubting? (actually if I had to pick 1 of these 4 questions I think this is the one I'd go with).
I grew up in a religious family, but I didn't make my profession of faith until I was 18. Obviously I can't discount the importance of growing up in a Christian household. I imagine that if my parents were Jewish, I may have ended up Jewish instead. My theological side wants to point out that I'm saved because God chose me, but the practical side of me knows that very few kids in the middle of the Amazon spontaneously become Christian without any outside influence.
As for doubt, well there have been plenty of times I've doubted: deaths in the family, hate in the church, disasters (natural and man-made). Sometimes I think I've spent more time doubting than anything.
3. When was the first time you realized that your husband was the right one?
The night we met. We've been together ever since.
4. What's your favorite place in the world?
This is horribly domestic, but my favorite place in the world is on the couch, reading a book with Brian on the other end of the couch and the cats curled up around us.
From Joel
5. Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character?
Yes. Most recently Alexander the Great in The Persian Boy (go big or go home, I always say. I know he's not fictional, but the book was historical fiction.) But there have been others: When I was much younger, Ethan Hawk's character, Todd, in Dead Poets' Society, for example.
6. Which 5 books would you take to a desert island?
The Bible, by God
Walden, by Thoreau
At Swim, Two Boys, by O'Neill
The Norton Anthology of American Literature (yeah, I suppose that's cheating a bit)
Huck Finn, by Twain (assuming Huck Finn isn't in the Norton Anthology of American Literature.)
7. What is your earliest memory?
Being at my Grandmother's bedside before she passed. I'm not even sure if I was actually ever there, I've never asked my parents about it. I may have made it up. Other early memories include getting my first pair of glasses and crying because I thought everyone would make fun of me (they didn't). Television news talking about "Watergate" and assuming it was some sort of dam (this must have been quite late in the scandal, or even after because I was only born in 1971.)
8. What is your favourite sound?
The sound of a really great soprano singing in a Cathedral.
From Karen:
9. What drove you toward science as a career field?
I've always been interested in science. As a little kid I read lots of science fiction. And in school, it started with a 5th grade teacher who brought in all sorts of extra books and materials for me, about weather (mostly to shut me up ... I was a talker and would distract the other students from their work when I finished with mine.) Then it moved to astronomy, then biology, and finally chemistry. Frankly, it was either this, or become a literature professor, I think. Or a theology professor. I think it's pretty obvious that "teaching" is really my career field, and science just happens to be the topic. But I had lots of credits in chemistry by the time I graduated from Calvin, so that seemed like the logical choice. I think I would have been equally as happy in either of those professions.
10. What's your favorite thing about being married?
Brian.
11. What drives you to blog?
It's a great way to get chicks. A more detailed answer can be found here.
12. When you were an adorable little boy, what did you want to be when you grew up?
When dinosaurs roamed the Earth, back when God was a child, in the time before time, when I was an adorable little boy, I wanted to be a Muppeteer just like Jim Henson.
From Jase:
13. If you could be better at anything, what would it be?
Any sort of athletic activity, generally. I suppose this seems fairly superficial, but when one considers all the time people spend doing various athletic activities, I think I'm missing out by being so abysmally bad at sports. I'm talking reeeeeaaaaly bad. I never learned to throw a football, never learned to swim, etc. (Pretty sad, huh?) I was forced to play Little League when I was young, but the coaches weren't very good, and I never actually learned how to do anything but strike out. (Are you crying yet?) I've been bowling twice in my life and golfing twice. I'm not a complete failure at volleyball, I suppose.
I took up music instead. I was in band in school, and choir, and I continue to sing.
14. You are a superhero. What's your name? What's your superpower? and what's the name of your sidekick?
It's funny you ask that because I AM a superhero. I am The Great Klutzo. My superpower is to trip over anything, even things that aren't there. My side kick is Bruise Boy.
15. What's your favorite piece of clothing? and why? (generic or specific)
Jeans. They're just so dang comfy and versatile.
16. Would you rather sit naked on pedestal in a public park or sit naked on a silver platter at a dinner party with an apple in your mouth?
I'd rather die than do either. Public nudity ain't my thing (but I encourage it in others!) But, I suppose I'd pick the dinner party, assuming there were fewer people and less chance of getting arrested. Oh, and I like apples a lot, though I'm fairly picky about variety. I'd prefer something like a Granny Smith, or a Jonathan, or Paula Red. I don't like sweet apples, only the tart ones. And they can't be the soft kind, only the really crunchy kind. If I'm going to be cooked on the platter, please remove the apple, because cooked apples gross me out. (I grew up on an apple orchard, so I have fairly specific views about these matters.)
From Libragirl:
17. What's your favorite color?
The Color Purple.
18. If you could only say one curse word a day what word would it be?
"F_ck." No question about it. It's both an exclamation and a verb. I guess "sh_t" and "damn" can also be both an exclamation and a verb, but less interesting verbs.
19. Do you like animals as pets?
We have two cats, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. They're brothers (from the same litter, but probably different fathers -- cats can do that, you know) and are wonderful companions. Very amsuing, and slightly neurotic, and gay. In many ways they act more like dogs than cats. They aren't aloof at all, they like to follow us around, and are very affectionate. We'd love to have a puppy, but we don't really have a puppy-friendly lifestyle.
20. Do you think all bugs are icky?
Nope, just most of them, especially earwigs. Lightning bugs are way cool though, as are preying mantises, walking sticks, and other unusual insects. Mosquitoes just suck.
There! That's twenty! Thanks for playing the meme game! |
