In a previous post, I talked about our dear friend Paul Rolf Jensen, a lawyer who likes to bring heresy charges against ministers in the Presbyterian Church (USA) for doing naughty things like ordaining gay people and conducting marriage ceremonies for them.
He's at it again, and the Austin American-Statesman has the story.
And, again, he's not bringing charges against me. It's one thing for Jensen to bring charges against ministers conducting same-sex marriages, but what about us poor queers who are actually getting married!? Don't we need Mr. Jensen's wise and loving guidance far more? I mean...we're the avowed practicing [unrepentant] homosexuals here. We're the ones who need our souls cleansed from the festering heresy within. Where's a lawyer when you need one?
This time he's bringing charges against Rev. Jim Rigby, pastor of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in North Austin, TX. Apparently, Rev. Rigby conducted a same-sex marriage for two male students at the Unviersity of Texas. Another UT student (a first-year...not surprisingly) contacted Mr. Jensen, who then filed charges.
The cool thing about this otherwise tedious story is that Rev. Rigby is actually helping Jensen build his case. He is supplying his inquisitor accuser with details about the other same-sex marriages he's performed. He wants to force church officials to "confront the issue of homosexuality in the church" -- a gutsy move, since his ordination (and therefore livelihood) is on the line. A growing number of straight allies are starting to take some risks in the denomination. I'm usually a cynic, but it does feel like things are changing...slowly. Alas, change in the Church comes one funeral at a time.
God bless Rev. Rigby. |
