Sophus and Lena raised their family on the farm northeast of Northwood where Halvor Bjerke had built a large house and barn. Sophus had an amazing story, described here in words written down by his wife, Lena:

On the thirteenth of May 1957 Mr. Evanson kicked into some bricks on the sidewalk and fell forward. He was unable to get up and when people came to his assistance he appeared to be in a coma. An ambulance was summoned and he was rushed to the hospital. Our local doctors gave the tests for which they had facilities, such as diabetes, alcoholic content etc. These were negative and to increase their bafflement he was unable to speak, although he was now out of coma. The following day we took him to Grand Forks where they gave further tests. The only sign of injury was a bruise on his right forearm. This he informed us (by writing) was caused by his head striking his arm when he fell. We realized by now that he had not been in a coma at any time but some sort of shock. They found nothing tangible in Grand Forks either so we took him to the University Hospital in Minneapolis. There they checked out the possibility of either a stroke or brain tumor. They decided his trouble was psychogenetic and advised us to wait for a time because they believed the next step would be psychopathic treatment. He could speak when given [sodium] amatol but he became more tense and nervous with each treatment. There was very little improvement through the summer, though he did gain strength again and carried on fieldwork as before. He took a few chiropractic treatments during the summer and though they helped his general condition they did nothing for his speech. That winter he decided to try the State Hospital at Jamestown. He was treated there for six weeks. They first tried hypnosis, which relaxed and calmed him but apparently they were not satisfied and switched to shock. These upset him so he refused to remain at the hospital any longer. However, as soon as he was released from there and on the way home he regained his speech. This lasted for two days but he has no recollection of those days. As soon as he went out in public he lost his speech again. The first year or two he would speak when startled or angry and there was no stuttering or slurring of words but nothing like that affects him anymore.

Most of Sophus’ grandchildren grew up with no memory of Grandpa’s voice; in spite of this, he was considered a fun and joking type of grandpa! In February 1973, the following article was published, written by Sophus’ daughter Edith Lee:

NORTHWOOD – After fifteen years, nine months and thirteen days of silence, Sophus Evanson, Northwood, started talking again. He addressed the senior citizens meeting Monday night, told a couple of jokes, and sang a song.

Sophus said he had a dream ten days ago and knew he could talk, but he didn’t know how to tell his wife, so he waited and tried out his vocal chords when he was alone. Monday night he tried them out and found he could talk just about as well as he could before 1957.

In May, 1957, while walking on the street in Hatton, Sophus stumbled over some bricks on the sidewalk and fell. He was taken, unconscious, to the Northwood Hospital. When he recovered he was unable to talk. He spent a lot of time in hospitals, in Grand Forks, Jamestown, Minneapolis, and had a lot of doctors working with him. He would say a word or two occasionally, under stress; he spoke for two days once; and again for a little under sedation. But he gave up finally and resorted to paper and pencil, which is the only way he has communicated these many years.

Most of the time Sophus could work, on his own farm, then for neighbors when he quit farming himself. He enjoyed visiting with friends, and wherever he went he left his notes. His home was always littered with comments to his wife or to visitors — when you came over you could pick them up and get an instant replay of the conversation before you came.

Tuesday he called and talked to his grandchildren, who could not really remember what his voice was like any more, and who could hardly believe that Grandpa could really talk again. He sounds a little hoarse, his throat is sore, and sometimes he has to stumble around a little before a sound will come out right. But he can talk and he can sing, and he can tell Norwegian jokes! And he can thank God for the gift of speech we take so for granted when we always have it. When we asked him how he could start talking he said, “I don’t know. Prayer, I guess.”

Sophus’ granddaughter Elizabeth recalls asking him why he thought he had lost his voice. His response was that he figured that he didn’t use his voice the way God wanted him to use it, so He took it away. Sophus lived for about 15 months after having had his voice restored, and his family took great delight in hearing Sophus’ Norwegian brogue in song and jokes. Sitting around the kitchen table visiting with Sophus was a treasured event.
