All nine children were born in Norway. The two oldest, Evan and Augustinius, were born in Jemtland, Østre Toten. All the other children were born in Gropen, Østre Toten. The Even Hegernes estate was in Vestre Toten. (Østre means east; Vestre means west.) Evan emigrated to America first, in the company of his uncle Anton, arriving in Adamsville, WI, at the home of Per Holte. They sailed from Norway Apr. 16, 1869. Evans first act in America was to Americanize his name, as he believed he did when he changed the spelling to Evanson.

Hearken to me, you who pursue deliverance, you who seek the Lord; Look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the quarry from which you were digged.
