This is the layers palette. It is like stacked sheets of glass with pictures on them. If you can't get something to work, check that you are on the right layer. The layer you are on is dark blue.
|
This is the History palette. It will be your best friend. You can do multiple undos and then change your mind and go back to what you had. It is way superior to ctrl Z.

Photoshop can be confusing. The 2 things you really need to understand are selections and layers. Selection tools are how you pick the part of a picture you want to work on. These are pictures of some of the tools. If you run into problems, look at these first, then ask a classmate. If you still are puzzled, raise your hand and I'll get to you as soon as I can. |

| The tool on the left is the eraser. To make your eraser larger tap the bracket on the right on the keyboard. To make it smaller, tap on the left. (This will also work on the paint brush.)
The other tool is the paint bucket. It is for painting bigger areas. |
The thing that looks like a rubber stamp is called the clone tool. It will copy exactly whatever you Alt click on. Go ahead, paint yourself a 3rd eyeball.
DO NOT USE the brush that looks like this. Find the plain brush. Remember the trick with the brackets for making it smaller and bigger. You can also change the shape of the brush. One choice paints maple leaves. The rectangle that goes from light to dark is a gradient tool. You can change the colors by clicking up top. Remember, less is more. |
This is the text tool. Look at the banner on the top to see how many choices you have: font, size, color, wavy, vertical. Try them out. | The white and black squares are the background and foreground colors. (Ususally they are reversed.) Double click on the top squre to call up the color picker.
The eyedropper will match colors for you. Click it on the color you want and it will change that white squre to the color you want. The magnifying class makes your picture temporarily bigger while you fine tune things. The hand will move the picture. It will also make the picture smaller again if you double click on it. |
| The square, the lasso and the magic wand are selection tools.
The square will select a square or rectangle. The lasso lets you draw a free form selection. The magic wand is way cool! It will pick all the things that are the same color. forgot to pick the move tool. |
The circle and oval tool is under the square.
The magnetic lasso will magically stick to the edges where colors in a picture change. There is also a lasso that will let you choose things in straight lines. The cross with the arrows is the move tool. If you selected something and you can't get it to move, chances are you forgot to pick the move tool. |
