We cover many mathematical concepts in art. Two related concepts, proportion and scale, underlie a lot of drawing skills. Faces and figures of people basically have similar proportions. Perspective drawing is an illustration of proportion and scale. We also build two different polyhedra, a stella octangula and a dodecahedron. To construct these the students must make nets. Another area covered in art is tessellation. We look at the art of M. C. Escher and create our own pictorial tessellations. We also cover the use of a compass and a straight edge to make geometric designs. |
