Neurotechnosis
The science that deals with mental processes and
behaviors associated with technology.
I want to leave a legacy, so I've decided to invent
something. Now I'm not mechanically inclined, and I'm not smart enough to win
the Nobel Prize, unless they develop a category for lethargy - for which I'm a
pioneer.
I have considered going back to
school to study psychology, but I'd have to get off the couch first. I have this
strong belief that we will soon (next 10 years) see an entirely new branch of
human neurosis develop which revolves around technology. While our human nature
hasn't changed in thousands of years, the psychology of how we deal with our
daily lives, has changed dramatically.
While technology doesn't change our
nature, it does have a major impact on the world and how we relate to it. The
simple cell phone has gone from a tool of the rich, to a ubiquitous annoyance no
one can escape. As someone who has owned a cell phone since 1989, I can tell you
that there has been a major change in society since the radical adoption of the
mobile phone in the past five years. The cell phone has created a world of
social introverts. And although it seems like an oxymoron, it is far from it. We
see people every day who are out in the world, traveling among us, moving in
society, while chained to a cell phone, oblivious to their surroundings. I hold
the door for people who don't acknowledge me, I hear annoying chirps during
romantic dinners, there are cell phone calls and text messaging in school
classes, and I see kids who should be playing with friends are instead talking
with friends on their cell phone. I've even been in a theater while someone
actually had a conversation during a movie.
We seem to be creating a society of
techno-automitons. In fact, we're starting to see people who literally cannot
control their addiction to technology. I believe that we're going to see a whole
new set of technological neurosis; addictions and disorders that revolve around
how we interact and react with our machines. We are a society out of control and
I also believe we'll start to see a new luddite movement very soon. I use to
love cell phones. Now when I go out, I leave the phone in the glove compartment,
and if I do bring it with me, I turn it off. I find it empowering to be "in
control."
So, back to my legacy. I've
decided that my legacy to the world will be coining the new phrase to describe
technological disorders and the new branch of psychology.
