8th March : AELc presented a Research Seminar in the Applied Computing Division at the University of Dundee, Scotland. Title:  "Imaging the World with Radar: Challenges for Applied Computing"

The CEOS SAR Calval 2006 meeting is be held in Edinburgh, Scotland, October 3rd-6th  (see Related Links): AELc are assisting as members of the local organising committee

General Information

AELc was established in 2001 in response to a demand from users of radar data for access to the very latest research techniques in radar imaging and processing. To meet this objective, AELc offers independent consultancy and training to industry and government laboratories in advanced radar imaging techniques and their applications. Support is offered in the very latest technology, including

* radar polarimetry,

* radar interferometry

* polarimetric interferometry

* radar tomography

AELc also supports an in-house research program aimed at developing new applications of multi-channel radar in remote sensing for commercial and scientific users.

Current Projects:

* ALOS-PALSAR

AELc are principle investigators on a research project involving satellite radar observation of land surfaces. The Japanese space agency JAXA have launched the radar PALSAR on board the advanced land observation satellite ALOS in January 2006. This satellite has three remote sensing instruments: the Panchromatic Remote-Sensing Instrument for Stereo Mapping  (PRISM) for generating Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), the Advanced Visible and Near Infrared Radiometer type 2 (AVNIR-2) for multispectral land coverage observation, and the Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) for 24-hour all weather land observation.

The ScotSAR consortium (AELc, University of Edinburgh, Macaulay Institute and Forest Research) are studying new radar techniques for the use of space based remote sensing for large area forest mapping applications. Three special test sites are being used to develop and validate inversion models : Glen Affric in Scotland, Injune in Queensland, Australia and Belize in the Caribbean.

In addition, AELc are collaborating with two Australian partners, Apogee in Lobethal, SA and Gecoz in Brisbane Queensland, as part of the PALSAR International Calibration/Validation team. We have deployed special calibration reflector sites near Darwin in the Northern Territory and Adelaide in South Australia to study image quality issues related to ionospheric effects and system errors.

* European Space Agency (ESA-ESRIN, ESA-ESTEC)

AELc participated in the following recent European Space Agency ESA consortia:

  1. New techniques for simultaneous SAR interferometry. This study was aimed at developing new multi-satellite space-borne radar constellations for future applications in the remote sensing of ocean, ice and land surfaces. ESTEC - Contract No. 16100/02/NL/EC

  1. The use of SAR Interferometry to derive Bio and Geo-physical variables. This study was aimed at developing algorithms for estimating surface and vegetation parameters based on space-borne observation of interferometric phase and coherence. Three classes of parameter estimation were considered, namely atmosphere, ice and snow and vegetation. ESTEC - Contract No. 16366/02/NL/MM

  1. Analysis of Polarimetric Interferometric SAR Data. This study was aimed at developing new quantitative parameter estimation algorithms based on  combinations of SAR Polarimetry with Interferometry. Three application areas were considered, namely land ice, agriculture and forestry. ESTEC - Contract No. 16924/02/NL/LvH

  1. Polarimetric and Interferometric Mission and Application Study. This study was aimed at assessing the suitability of current and near-future space radar systems for the development of new products based on polarimetric interferometry. ESRIN - Contract No. 17893/03/I-LG

  1. POLSARPro : AELc are partners with the University of Rennes in developing open source software for processing and analysis of space and airborne polarimetric radar data. ESRIN - Contract No. 17863/03/I-LG

  1. DRAGON : “Techniques for Deriving Forest Information from Polarimetric SAR Interferometry”. AELc are PI on this ESA-China collaborative radar research program. See related links for more details
