Directions
to Start:
Follow Angeles Crest Highway to Buckhorn Campground, about 8 miles
past Chilao. Park in the hikers parking lot at the end of a side road
to the right about halfway down
through the campground. Dont park in any of the campsite spurs.
The trail is easily found on the left side of Buckhorn Creek, at the north
end of the trailhead parking.
A National Forest Adventure Pass is required for vehicles parked at
the Trailhead.
Clues:
This hike takes you along some of the prettiest country in the San Gabriel
Mountains.
Start at Buckhorn Campground and take the Burkhart trail. Walk down the trail
through a forest of pine,
fir and cedar. Side spurs along the trail would take you down to Buckhorn
Creek. Stay on the main Trail.
Follow the trail down past the switchbacks. You'll come upon a creek crossing.
Cross the stream, and
head up the trail 8 steps.
Look to your right for a tall cedar tree growing out of the rock (with patches
of moss growing on the tree).
Walk 7 steps up to the base of the upper roots being careful while climbing
up on the slippery slope.
Nestled in the angle of the tree roots behind some tree bark and rocks is
the box you seek.
Check for creepy crawlies before reaching in for the box. Make sure to be
descrete before climbing up
and removing the letterbox, and please hide it carefully when you return it
to its hiding place.
A little farther down, the trail forks at Cooper Canyon. The right fork at
the trail junction takes you down
through Cooper Canyon, past Cooper Falls, to Littlerock Creek.
The falls can be seen from the trail, but there is a trail a little father
down that branches off the main trail
and decends to the base of the falls.
Beautiful Littlerock Creek is worth the additional short walk.
From here, return the way you came for a 4.4. mile round-trip.
Even though its all uphill back to Buckhorn, this is a very rewarding
hike.
