BEFORE THE CONTRACT
show you're a pro & build your base
- Blogging: Join a group blog or start your own
- Post on a regular basis (agents/editors are looking for signs you can follow through on things)
- Stay away from hot button issues
- Present the image you want editors and agents to see when you query
- Put your Web home on your business card. It allows people to find out more about you before they contact you.
- Use Google "Alerts" to see what's being said about you or your work. Can you capitalize on it? Join the conversation!
- Join Communities To Create Readership & “Platform”
Remember: Your audience is not writers, it’s readers. Joining communities of writers may keep you sane and help you sell your book to publishers, but it’s not where you should be looking for readers.
- Forums/blogs of people like your characters
consider this option when you’re doing research; you can create an audience even as you prepare to write.
