MOCNESS stands for Multiple Opening and Closing Nets Environmental Sampling
System. Series of nets alligned vertically are connected to the motor with
a cable. Electronically triggering the motor from the ship, at desired depth,
will slide the bottom portion of the bottom net and open. Another triggering
will close that net and opens a second net by releasing the bar that is connected
to the top portion of the bottom net or the bottom portion of the next net.
For our purpose, the first net (the bottom net) is left opened to sample
surface to 100m. Once it reaces 100m, it is triggered to close that net
and the next net is opened, simultaneously, to sample 100m to 75m. It is
then trigered as the MOCNESS is brought up every 25m.
